BUT, when I first tried sometime last week, I got a message saying that they weren't available at all as Lala hadn't yet worked out an agreement with her. I looked just now, and lo and behold, there they are. So the experiment is inconclusive and doesn't explain why I can listen to the full versions of the Harlem Shakes songs, and can only hear 30 second clips of Passion Pit. If they're going to allow people to steal/illegally share music, why discriminate? Lala hates Passion Pit?Gracenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6216066561826697576.post-33970116712851828932009-05-10T11:15:00.000-07:002009-05-10T11:15:00.000-07:00Not 30 second snippets for the first song...too la...Not 30 second snippets for the first song...too lazy to do the others.

This is for sure illegal. As long as you make another fixed copy that is distributed to others (the song from your computer to lala's servers) it is illegal. That is why Pandora has to pay something like 7 cents a song it plays or whatever. Just because its streaming does no make it ok...from case law, the copy on the sever is 'fixed' enough.

The real question is if it's worth it for the copyright holders to actually sue you or lala. I think the music industry is tired of attacking consumers...well kinda. They would probably try and take down lala first. And with the case law on hand, and the DMCA sucking the life out of pirating, I would put the chances of lala being held as an infringer at 90%. So sad too bad.

My personal views....everyone should pirate. http://gizmodo.com/5202399/a-pirates-code-of-conduct-for-bittorrent

Soapbox time:
Look, im not going to watch the movie Punisher War Zone. The only way I'm going to watch that movie is if it was on TNT or within my reach. So whoever holds the copyright to that movie should just be glad if I ever watch it by downloading it. Having your movie/music make no money but having a 'fan' base is better than having a movie/music with no fan base and no money.

Lesson to be learned: Make better content. I am going to watch Star Trek in the theaters (hopefully in IMAX), because the reviews are great, and its content the I actually want to watch. Make good products and we will pay for them. Make crappy products and we will pirate the crap outta them.
End Soapbox.

Also, its nice to see Aaron actually posting something juicy, rather than posting an exaggerated version of his google calendar (see Earn Your Hipster Merit Badge)..hahahahakpnoreply@blogger.com
