This Is the Way We Ball

If I know one thing about my blog's audience, it's that you're all rabid WNBA fans. And, as such, it's probably old news to most of you that the Houston Comets have disbanded. This came as a surprise to me, as the Comets are pretty much the only WNBA team I can name, mostly because I'm pretty sure they win the league championship every year (and now that I actually looked this up, I know for a fact that they've won four titles). Anyway, upon hearing this news, I had three immediate thoughts.

1) What does it say about your league when your most well-known, winningest team disbands? That's messed up.

2) Wait, on second thought ... what if the Yankees, Cowboys, and Celtics disbanded? That would actually be awesome. The WNBA might be on to something here.

3) Lil Flip must be piiiiiiiissed.

Yup, we're finally talking about music now. Lil Flip, one of the pack of Houston rappers who all got famous for about ten minutes before fading back into sizzurp-drenched anonymity, released a single in 2002 called "This Is the Way We Ball." While mostly excellent, this song featured one of the most confusing boasts I've ever heard:

"We might buy the Comets - name it, I done it
If you see it and want it, buy it, own it"

That's right ... Lil Flip actually boasted about the possibility of his buying a WNBA team.

Now, when I first heard this, I thought, "That has to be the absolute least gangsta thing anyone has ever said. Really? The Comets? Are you going to buy a ballet troupe next?"

But then I thought about it some more. And I came to the conclusion that it might actually be genius. And here's why:

Lil Flip could brag about buying cars and rims and bling and all that ... but everyone brags about that. Having that stuff is like a pre-requisite for getting into the rap game. Lil Flip, on the other hand, has so much money he doesn't even know what to do with it. He's just buying stupid stuff. It's all the same to him.

And I think that would be an awesome premise for a rap song (and really, it might have been done for all I know). Just verse after verse of "I just bought X, I don't even know what that IS, that's how rich I am."

So ... your comment question: If you were going to buy something to show off to the rest of the hip-hop community just how rich you are, what would it be?

Me? I'm going million dollar submarine. And I'm putting rims on that thing.
