Shay’s Best of 2024

“AMERIICAN REQUIEM” - Beyonce: This list could’ve just been the Cowboy Carter tracklist. Instead, I chose the opening song (possibly Bey’s best album Track 1) of the album of the year. The song, a funeral dirge for an America that never lived up to its ambitious promise, took on a new and particularly devastating importance following the November election. Sonically complex, genre bending, and pure artistry. If that ain’t Beyonce, tell me what is.

“But Daddy I Love Him” - Taylor Swift: Look, I know Taylor didn’t write this from the perspective of a closeted homosexual growing up among Christians who claim to care but don’t give an actual shit about you. But I heard it that way. Knowing it’s actually her send off to weirdo Swifties who need to control her love life makes it even more fun. Being at the Eras Tour with three of my best friends screaming, “All the wine moms still holdin’ out, but FUCK EM, IT’S OVER” was more cathartic and spiritual that any moment og my 20+ years in church. Also… Taylor’s best pre-chorus ever, hands down.

“No One Mourns the Wicked” - Wicked Cast: I was in tears from the first chord. I’ve been in love with this musical for 20+ years. Like “AMERIICAN REQUIEM,” I included this song because it’s phenomenal, but also because it kicks off an album I can listen to with almost no skips (sorry Peter Dinklage, Jeff Goldblum, and the first 60 seconds of “The Wizard and I”). Ariana came in guns a-blazin’ and the next 160 minutes were pure magic.

“In My Room” - Medium Build: There are only 4 men on this list (Women’s stories matter - they just matter) and only two of them are the actual reason they’re included. Medium Build’s album Country sent me to pieces the first time I heard it. “In My Room” speaks to the shared experience that many queer kids had: our childhood rooms were the only safe place for us to just exist, the one space that gave us the freedom, as the song says, “to get to dream up who I really want to be.”

“Guess” - Charli XCX ft. Billie Eilish: I’m one of the few gays that didn’t fall head over heels for brat immediately. But fear not, militant homosexuals: I came around - quickly. The remix album sealed the deal for me and this is the highlight. “Wait (The Whisper Song)” walked so Lesbian Billie Eilish could run. And boy did she ever run!

“Birds of a Feather” - Billie Eilish: Bold, I know, to pick such an obscure song. But Billie is a generational talent and this is her trying a new sound at her vocal best.

“Angel of My Dreams” - JADE: This song really is like being gay. Confusing, trying to be a lot of things at once, weird and almost off-putting at first. But then, and this is a big then, you start to get used to it and it’s such a fucking incredible experience, you wouldn’t give it up for the world.

“Diet Pepsi” - Addison Rae: I was (am) hesitant to embrace Addison as a true pop girlie, but this song did it for me. And I will always hear the lyric as “Costco chain”.

“No Man’s Land” - Miranda Lambert: I don’t think Miranda Lambert gets the credit she deserves, even within the country world. Her new album was, yet again, a stunner and this song took the cake for me.

“No Broke Boys” - Tinashe: What do we have to do to get this woman the recognition she deserves? Straights, this one is on you.

“Slim Pickins” - Sabrina Carpenter: Sabrina meets Dolly meets Kacey. And a Grindr notification sound is the icing on this very, very gay cake.

“WHATCHU KNOW ABOUT ME” - GloRilla ft. Sexyy Red: Let me be clear, this only made the list because Sexyy Red stopped supporting Trump. This year belonged to GloRilla and I love every part of it. Please go watch TikToks of her Memphis accent. The South produces the best rappers, hands down. That’s not a request for comment.

“HISS” - Megan Thee Stallion: Speaking of the South producing the best rappers. I think that the Megan’s Law bar will go down in rap history, as it should. As much as it was Glo’s year, it was Meg’s too. And she deserves it. To be clear, fuck EACH. AND. EVERY. PERSON. who ever questioned the veracity of Megan’s story.

“squabble up” - Kendrick Lamar: And here we are … an exception to that irrefutable fact about Southern rappers. After Kendrick surprise dropped this album, I saw someone refer to him as Kendrick Knowles Carter Lamar and I agree. She’s a stunt queen and I am very here for it. Definitely didn’t think I’d see Drake ended so hard this year.

“That’s My Floor” - Magdalena Bay: Britney Spears and Sleigh Bells had a baby and it is this Magdalena Bay track.

“Ganeni” - Elyanna: The first artist to perform an all-Arabic set at Coachella and Lollapalooza. Elyana is a Chilean-Palestinian artist who gives me hope that notoriously monolingual Americans might be ready to accept Arabic music in the same way we opened our arms to Bad Bunny and Rosalia.

“thing u do” - Tori Kelly: Tori Kelly is one of this generation’s best vocalists and this song (as well as the accompanying performances) finally felt like they were going to do something big with her career. Again, I feel like straight people are to blame.

“Disease” - Lady Gaga: MOTHER MONSTER IS BACK.

“Listen (Arab Girls)” - Dania: After I listened to Elyanna’s album enough, Spotify was like, “hey r u ok? pls listen to something else, anything else” and thankfully, Dania was the suggestion.

“Alter Ego” - Doechii ft. JT: This song sits at the intersection of “Doechii is finally getting the recognition she deserves” and “what if Azealia Banks didn’t say something horrifyingly offensive every two weeks?”

“Forget About Us (Live)” - Perrie: A tie for my favorite release by Little Mix members in 2024. The live version is where Perrie really blows the roof off vocally. I am 95% sure she said, “Lemme release this and Kelly Clarkson it before Kelly can.”

“Jesus, My Mama, My Therapist” - Tierra Kennedy: One of the benefits of the massive impact of Cowboy Carter is the exposure black country artists received this year. This is a prime example. Pure country fun that feels like it belongs in the mid 90s. And that’s a really, really good thing.

“Better Things To Do” - Terri Clark & Ashley McBryde: Speaking of mid-90’s country, Ashley McBryde joined Terri Clark to bring Terri her flowers and breathe new life into this 1995 country classic. I miss this era of women in country.

“Bridge Over Troubled Water” - Jacob Collier ft. Tori Kelly & John Legend (AND YEBBA!): Yebba chose not to be credited on this song, but I refuse to ignore her here. Yebba’s first verse is stunning and then Tori Kelly goes full Tori Kelly and delivers an absolutely unreal interpretation that highlights why she has an argument for taking the “best runs” crown of today’s girlies.

“Good Luck, Babe!” - Chappell Roan: The meteoric rise of Chappell Roan was an absolute pleasure to watch. She deserves every minute of it. And she also deserves every piece of privacy she’s clawed back for herself. And to the people that think her fierce defense of her private life makes her “not ready” for stardom: You’re fucking weird. Go touch grass. (Also go watch Sasha Colby perform this song.)

HONORARY MENTION: “Your Good Girl’s Gonna Go Bad” - Tammy Wynette: I read a biography of Tammy Wynette this year that broke my heart. But it also led me to a deep dive of her music, ending with her being in my top 5 on Spotify Wrapped. This song was the absolute highlight for me. She’s the First Lady of Country Music for a reason.

Shay’s 22 for 2022

After #1, this list is in no particular order.

1. Renaissance - Beyoncé: Is it lazy to include this entire album instead of picking a favorite? Yes. I do not care. I have listened to this album in its entirety at least once a day since its release. And my top track changes almost as often. An iconic album that centers and elevates Black queer contributions to music. GOAT shit.

2. “Break My Soul” (The Queens Remix) - Beyoncé feat. Madonna: Technically, not included on Renaissance, thereby qualifying for separate inclusion on the list. I don’t have anything to say about this that hasn’t been said. An instant queer anthem.

3. “Vigilante Shit” - Taylor Swift: Some overwrought and even cringy lyrics in this song, which isn’t something I say too often about Taylor. That being said, the second verse is just so fucking petty. I live.

4. “Every Time I Close My Eyes” - Babyface feat. Kenny G: This song was released in 1996 but it’s new to me this year. And there are God-tier Mariah backing vocals - hearing those for the first time in 2022 was a special treat I had no idea was coming.

5. “Tezeta (Nostalgia)” - Mulatu Astatke: I discovered this 60’s Ethiopian jazz song on TikTok. No idea how. But I’ve never been more glad for a random FYP offering. I feel this one in my whole body.

6. “Moments in the Woods” - Sara Bareilles: Broadway Bareilles showed off and showed out this year.

7. “Old Country Church” (Jubilee Version) - Tyler Childers: Probably my favorite male country artist out there right now.

8. “All I Need to Hear” - The 1975: “Sandcastles” by Beyoncé but make it Caucasian. Somehow, I don’t hate the result.

9. “Gospel Night at the Strip Club” - Ashley McBryde feat. Benjy Davis: A hell of a song from a hell of an album. Ashley McBryde’s concept album is a great listen from start to finish.

10. “American Teenager” - Ethel Cain: See Ilana Bergstrom for all things Ethel Cain related.

11. “Prière Païenne” - Celine Dion: Again, not a new song. But it was lip synced on Drag Race Canada and was a reminder of everything we love about Celine. Sending her all the love in the world.

12. “Sometimes” - MUNA: Despite the fact that they didn’t include the bridge (heresy!), this breathed new life into one of Britney’s early singles. Britney may publicly hate singing the song, but thank god MUNA doesn’t.

13. “Cross That Bridge” - The Cast of Schmigadoon!: A parody show about musicals gave me one of my favorite “musical” songs in recent memory.

14. “Blick Blick” - Coi Leray feat. Nicki Minaj: *copy paste sentence about Nicki being problematic from 2020, 2021, etc.*

15. “Queen of the Night” + “Happier Than Ever” - Kelly Clarkson: Kelly’s pre-Idol demo of “Queen of the Night” was a staple of my high school mix CDs, so getting this was a delayed treat. However, Ms. I Can Outsing Anyone On Their Own Song took “Happier Than Ever” and ATE. IT. ALL. THE. WAY. UP.

16. “RIP, Love” - Faouzia: Diet Ojos Así. And that is a compliment.

17. “We Go Up” - Nicki Minaj feat. Fivio Foreign: *copy paste sentence about Nicki being problematic from 2020, 2021, etc.*

18. “Treat Me” - Chloe: Honestly, we are tired. Please give us an album. Please.

19. “Lick” - Shenseea feat. Megan Thee Stallion: Will forever associate this with driving through Maspalomas, escaping the gloom of Amsterdam in January.

20. “Slut Him Out” - Baby Tate: I … hehehehe.

21. “Hot In It” - Tiesto & Charli XCX: It’s just a perfect song to hear on a sweaty dancefloor.

22. “I Can’t Love You Anymore” - Maren Morris: This song was already on repeat before Maren Morris took on Sean Hannity and transphobes. Lunatic country music person, indeed.

Look, I’m hard pressed to offer comforting or overly optimistic thoughts for 2022. What I can say, however, is that we made it. Bloodied and bruised, or full of smiles (if this is you - how?!), we’ve gotten to the end of 2021. And for me, that’s been possible only with music. 2021 was a banner year for women in rap. The ladies came to eat… even the one from Queens who has been left off of this playlist as I’m pretty sure she’s still doing her own research.

It’s been next to impossible for me to whittle my list down to 25 or so. So, I’m not. What you’ll see below are my top songs of the year, some with a little suggestion or two added under the song for related listening.

  1. Snow tha Product - Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 39: One of the most technically skilled rappers alive. The flawless English-Spanish switches. The cockiness. And she’s bisexual. Truly one of the best songs I have heard in years. CANNOT. RECOMMEND. HIGHLY. ENOUGH.

    1. Snow tha Product - Que Oso

    2. Drumma Boy feat. Snow tha Product & Ludacris - I Said What I Said

  2. Mandy Moore - Tryin’ My Best, Los Angeles: As an unabashed “Walk Me Home” stan, I am thrilled to live through the Mandy Moore renaissance.

  3. Saweetie - Fast (Motion): It was an icy year for Saweetie, culminating in a couple of well-earned Grammy noms. It was a pretty bitch summer and we actually got to spend a good part of it with other people.

    1. Saweetie - Seesaw

    2. Saweetie feat. Doja Cat - Best Friend

    3. Saweetie - Sweat Check

  4. City Girls - Twerkulator: On a trip home for vaccinations in April, our friend Ira played the unreleased Soundcloud version of this on repeat. There was elation in our home when the sample was approved and we could hear Yung Miami remind us that bitch, she’s from the city any time we wanted.

  5. Jazmine Sullivan - Pick Up Your Feelings: Hard to say much about Jazmine other than the fact that she is one of the most talented, nimble vocalists alive. If you’ve been to my house, you’ve watched her sing “Home” from the Wiz at 9 years old. And she’s finally getting the love she deserves.

    1. Jazmine Sullivan (feat. H.E.R) - Girl Like Me

  6. Cardi B - Up: Balenciaga Bardi is back. This song was the perfect soundtrack to a year of almost flawless couture red carpet looks from Belcalis.

    1. Migos feat. Cardi B - Type Shit: My account think I’m gay, all I do is buy shit.

  7. Sef - Mattenklopper: I somehow figured out that this very handsome Dutch-Moroccan rapper went to my gym, so I listened to his latest album … and loved it. He made his way into my Spotify Top 5 (a man!) and was the first Dutch-language concert I ever attended. This song feels like the best of early to mid 2000s Jay Z beats.

  8. Monaleo - Beating Down Your Block: Look, don’t cross Monaleo.

  9. Renni Rucci - Talk: Loved this song before it had the (mis?)fortune of becoming a TikTok sound. Still love it.

  10. Rebecca Black - Personal: If you thought Rebecca Black began and ended with “Friday,” you were sorely wrong. This is top-tier lesbian pop right here, folks.

  11. Trixie Mattel feat. Orville Peck - Jackson: My husband and a world-famous drag queen remade a Johnny and June Carter Cash hit (without slightly racist lyrics). Maybe 2021 wasn’t as bad as we thought.

  12. Little Mix feat. Saweetie - Confetti: So Little Mix dropped the dead weight (YouTube Jesy Nelson at Jingle Bell Ball … that’s some out-of-key blackfishing) and added Saweetie. Bonus points for a music video featuring Bimini, Tayce and Awhora.

  13. Vincint feat. Alex Newell & Princess Precious - Higher

  14. Bexx - Hard to Love: I saw her on a “feel good” video where she heard her song on BBC radio for the first time. Listened to the song and… wow… I want her to be famous.

    1. Bexx - Biggest Mistake

  15. Iggy Azalea feat. Tyga - Sip It: Iggy and Tyga on a song seems to always work.

  16. Megan Thee Stallion - Thot Shit: Meg is Thee shit, per the recording academy. Also, she made me take a trip to Popeye’s after another meal for some Hottie sauce.

  17. Saucy Santana - Material Girl: If you’re not walking around your house randomly screaming “MATERIAL GWORLLL” what are you doing?

  18. Jessie J - I Want Love: Raise your hand if you expected Jessie J to release a banger this year. (My hand is not raised).

  19. Migos feat. Drake - Having Our Way: Aubrey released one of the year’s best-selling albums, but my favorite Drake moment came on this Migos album cut. Specifically, where he refers to Takeoff as “the third Migo.”

    1. Drake feat. Tr*vis Sc*tt - Fair Trade

    2. Drake - No Friends in the Industry

  20. Yebba - October Sky: Yebba’s My Mind live still ranks as one of my favorite vocal performances ever. Years later, we finally got the stunning debut album we’ve been praying for.

    1. Yebba - Boomerang

  21. MUNA feat. Phoebe Bridgers - Silk Chiffon: This was the year I truly came to love Phoebe Bridgers, and this song was like a little gift of summery joy once I was truly, madly, deeply in love.

  22. Chlöe - Have Mercy: The song. The video. The choreo. It was all just what we needed. And with her sister starring as The Little Mermaid soon, it seems we won’t stop stanning this family any time soon.

  23. Normani feat. Cardi B - Wild Side: We were begging this woman for a follow up to “Motivation.” The wait was worth it. The song is gorgeous and the video is a visual masterpiece.

  24. Latto - Big Energy: With a new name and money for a Mariah sample, Latto came ready to play with the big boys.

  25. BIA feat. G Herbo - BESITO: Had to leave off her duet with N*ck*, but that’s ok because this album was packed with hits.

    1. BIA feat. Lil Jon - BIA BIA

  26. Priyanka feat. Lemon - Come Through: I hope I never stop getting hype when this Lemon verse comes on. Best lyricism by a Ru girl ever?

  27. Quavo feat. Yung Miami - Strub the Ground: Quavo is giving mediocrity, but Yung Miami carries this track that makes me feel like it’s 1995.

  28. Jam & Lewis feat. Mariah Carey - Somewhat Loved: Was just living for this new Mariah joint.

  29. Kim Petras - Future Starts Now: Kim is insane and has released a few dubious tracks as of late, but this one had me moving all year.

  30. Caroline Polachek - Bunny Is a Rider: I have a feeling this is one we will be listening to for a very long time. Instant classic.

    1. Charli XCX feat. Christine and the Queens & Caroline Polachek - New Shapes

  31. Ellise - Bubblegum Brain: A bubbling-under-the-surface pop girl who delivered some top-tier pop tracks this year with a mystifying lack of support from her label.

  32. C. Tangana - Demasiadas Mujeres: C. Tanaga’s 2021 album was wide-reaching and fun. This one, unsurprisingly, pulled me in on first listen with what sounded like a halftime marching band.

  33. Ximena Sariñana - A No Llorar: Fun Spanish pop. Had her on repeat all year, landing her in my Spotify Top 5.

    1. Ximena Sariñana - Si Tú Te Vas

  34. Bad Gyal feat. El Guincho - Pussy: Can she sing? I don’t know. Does it matter? No, no it does not.

    1. Mariah Angeliq, Bad Gyal, Maria Becerra - BOBO

  35. Sturgill Simpson feat. Willie Nelson - Juanita: There was almost no way this duo could do wrong. And they didn’t.

  36. Lauren Alaina - Good Ole Boy: My winner of American Idol season 10 released a solid pop country album this year. The shade in the first verse is… beautiful.

  37. Tainy feat. Julieta Venegas & Bad Bunny - Lo Siento BB:/: I almost passed out when I saw that my favorite Spanish language artist (Julieta) was on a track with the love of my life.

  38. Mary Bragg - The Lonely Persistence of Time: A Spotify recommendation for the ages. Vocals taken from the Alison Krauss Bible.

  39. Baby Tate feat. Flo Milli - I Am: I think I’m going to use the chorus on this one as my daily affirmations.

  40. Adele - Oh My God: The vocal improvement had my jaw on the floor.

  41. Brandi Carlile - This Time Tomorrow: Another stellar Brandi album? Groundbreaking. She doesn’t miss.

    1. Brandi Carlile feat. Lucius - You and Me On the Rock

  42. Lil Nas X feat. Megan Thee Stallion - DOLLA SIGN SLIME: It was Nas’s year, and for good reason. As much as I loved the hits, this one was my highlight.

  43. Lady Gaga feat. Rina Sawayama - Free Woman Remix: Even without an album, Rina still gave us what we needed this year. And Gaga gave us more meme-able moments then we knew what to do with.

    1. Rina Sawayama - Enter Sandman

  44. Nathy Peluso - Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 36: I am in desperate need of a Nathy/Snow song.
