My songs of 2022 in order of appearance.

Future Events 2023

Wed. February 15

Artist: Tove Styrke

Venue: Melkweg Upstairs

Song: “YouYouYou”

The song is about not being able to let go of that former lover even though you are supposedly moved on.

Sat. February 25

Artist: Raye

Venue: Melkweg The Max

Song: “Black Mascara”

Dance to the depressing story of a girl who has been mistreated by her lover and now tries to escape the hurt she’s feeling, but can’t.

Sat. March 4

Artist: Alex Vargas

Venue: Paradiso Tolhuistuin

Song: “Pages”

Another song about a relationship that has ended. It's time to close the book.

Tue. March 21

Artist: Channel Tres

Venue: Paradiso

Song: “6AM” & “Hollaback Bitch” (with Mura Masa &  Shygirl)

Channel Tres likes to mix it up. From groovy house to rap and everything in between. His live shows are supposed to be 110% energy.

Tue. March 21

Artist: SG Lewis

Venue: Melkweg The Max

Song: “Call On Me” (feat. Tove Lo)

This song was inspired by one of my favorite songs of all time “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)” by Dead or Alive. And Tove Lo's voice is always nice to listen to.

Tue May 9

Artist: Sam Smith

Venue: Ziggo Dome

Song: “Unholy” (Disclosure Remix with Kim Petras)

Who would have guessed that a song about a man who‘s cheating on his wife with a prostitute would become such a hit. I especially love the Disclosure remix. I’m curious how Sam is gonna perform this song live in May.

Wed. May 18

Artist: Zak Abel

Venue: Paradiso

Song: “Be Kind”

This song is nothing but positivity.

T.B.A. For 2023 (Hopefully)

Artist: Rosse

Song: “Main Character”

This song is just 2:00 long but it oozes attitude. Attitude with an electronic beat.

Artist: Pablo Nouvelle

Song: “Lovesongs & Sextapes”

Swiss producer Pablo Nouvelle released his album Vulnerability in October and I love every song of it. It’s a diverse album covering different aspects of life.

Artist: Nomi Ruiz

Song: “Pussy Power” (with &ME, Rampa, Adam Port)

Nomi Ruiz was the lead vocalist of Jessica 6. The group split up a while ago, but Nomi still releases music on her own and as guest vocalist for others. The message here is pretty clear. P.S. Listen to “White Horse” from Jessica 6 sometimes.

Artist: Gabriel Rios

Song: “Flore” (AZUL Rework)

I love this reworked version of “Flore” from Gabriel Rios. I think if this song would have participated in Eurovision it could have won. Awkward songs like this usually perform well.

Artist: Hayden James

Song: “On Your Own” (feat. Elderbrook, Cassian)

No end-year list without Elderbrook or Hayden James. They always deliver. I love their sound.

Artist: Florence + The Machine

Song: “Free”

Florence + The Machine needs no introduction. I think this is one of her best songs ever. The video is amazing with Bill Nighy playing her anxiety. Now put your stereo on full volume, put your own Bill Nighy out of the room and DANCE FREELY.

Artist: Kah-Lo

Song: “If The People Ain’t Dancing” (with Billen Ted)

Kah-Lo always gets the party going. We all need to dance more.

Artist: Tove Lo

Song: “No One Dies From Love”

Maybe it’s me, maybe I have a weird taste in music, but I sincerely don’t understand why this song didn’t become a hit. It only charted in Norway, Sweden and New Zealand. It’s a great pop song.

Artist: Robyn

Song: “All My Love” (with Louie Vega)

Robyn can do no wrong!

Artist: Jessie Ware

Song: “Free Yourself”

This should have been the Pride song for 2022. If only she released it 6 weeks earlier. Do yourself a favor and live your life with no excuses and free yourself

Artist: Herizen

Song: “Not Myself”

A vulnerable song from singer/actor Herizen Guardiola.

My Songs of 2021

Weirdly enough I never listened less to music than this past year. A mere 31,000 minutes according to my Spotify Wrapped. (That used to be more than double in the past years.) But I did listen to 127 different genres. My top 5 genres were all some sort of dance music, and so will be my list. I’ll give you my 20 dance/pop songs of 2021. (I cheated once or twice, but I guess Aaron can forgive me for that.)

I didn’t make this list in the order of how much I liked the songs but more in the order to make a decent playlist. If I like one song more than another really depends on my mood of the day. So it would never do justice to the songs or my taste of the day.

Let’s start easy …

***

COCKTAIL HOUR

***

“NEVER GONNA FORGET” – Black Coffee, Diplo, Elderbrook

Black Coffee is a South African DJ/producer who makes really laid back dance tracks. Here he collaborated with Diplo and, one of my favorites, Elderbrook.

“UBOMI ABUMANGA” – Sun-El Musician, Msaki

Another South African producer. (I think Afro-house will keep growing the next couple of years). I played this song all summer long.

“PLEASE” – Jessie Ware

No year-end list without Jessie Ware. I love Jessie.

“TOUCH” – Tobiahs, Blush’ko

Two Melbourne based producers teaming up for a great song.

“GOT ME” – Laura Mvula

This song reminds me of MJ’s “The way you make me feel.” It has a similar beat. If you haven’t listened to Laura Mvula’s album PINK NOISE, you should.

“FEED THE FIRE” – SG Lewis, Lucky Daye

A great uplifting disco inspired dance track. I think Samuel George Lewis is a secret grandchild of Nile Rodgers.

“CRY YOUR HEART OUT” – Adele

Okay this is not really a dance song and according to many the worst song of the album, but I love it. I love the reggae inspired beat.

“KISS OF LIFE” – Kylie Minogue, Jessie Ware

Two queens of Nu-Disco making a track together. It took me a few listens to feel the track, but now I love it. If you haven’t seen the video yet for this track prepare for a real CAMP ATTACK.

“DRINKS” – Cyn

This song is from 2020, but I came across it last spring. Cyn signed to Katy Perry’s label a while ago. So if Katy approves, who are we to argue.

***

TO THE DANCEFLOOR

***

“REMEMBER ME” – Risk Assessment, Jemeni G, Yuksek

“And you

Wasn’t I the one that helped you lace up your dancing shoes?

So you could stomp out of that closet

Said you’d never apologize for being Gloriously Gaynor

Did you give a Diana Ross cloth

When you cha-cha-cha’d your way into the Loft?

And let David massage your Boney M”

I rest my case!

“24 HOURS” – Agnes

“24 Hours” is a great follow up single to “Fingers Crossed”. The album Agnes released this year has also some pretty good songs.

“SPINNING” – No Rome, Charli XCX, The 1975

A great pop song. Very Charli XCX, not so very The 1975. But that is what makes this collab so nice.

“SISTER RAY” – Foxes

Foxes is finally releasing her new album next year. Foxes always makes great pop songs.

“RIVER” – PNAU, Ladyhawke

I’ve been a fan of Ladyhawke since she released “Paris is Burning” and “My Delirium” back in 2009. Everyone knows PNAU nowadays from his remix for Elton John and Dua Lipa. But he’s also part of the duo Empire of the Sun, and everyone knows “Walking on a Dream.”

“REAL GROOVE” (Studio 29054 Initial Talk Remix) – Kylie Minogue, Dua Lipa, Initial Talk

This remix is better than the official Studio 2054 Remix used in Dua’s live stream last year. You can also hear Dua’s voice way better in this one.

“BODY” – Elderbrook

Elderbrook makes great dance tracks. He’s playing @ the Melkweg on April 22nd next year. If you have the chance I highly recommend you go.

“PRESSURE” – Martin Garrix, Tove Lo

I love this collab. I love a dark dance track.

“DEMON” – Sad Night Dynamite, Moonchild Sanelly

Talking about a dark dance track. This one you gonna love or hate. There is no in between.

“YOURS” – ZHU, Arctic Lake

I always have a ZHU track on my list. He’s one of my favorite producers. He’s great at building up a song.

“BOOMERANG” – Dawn Richard

I played her album a lot this year. This is one of my favorite ones.

My 26 of ‘20

2020 has been a weird year, for sure. Ironically, in the year where we couldn’t go to clubs or bars, so many great dance and pop albums were released, filled with disco influences made for the dance floors. Think Jessie Ware, Roisin Murphy, Lady Gaga, Rina Sawayama and Kylie Minogue. Unfortunately we haven’t been able to do them justice on the dance floor … yet

Put on your dancing heels before you press play on my playlist.

1. Jessie Ware - “Save a Kiss”

The best song from the best album of 2020 from one of the best singers. There you go, I’ve said it. You know what the worst thing about his whole Covid thing is? That Jessie Ware couldn’t go on tour with this album. (I hope she will next year.) This album was born to party.

“Save A Kiss” is, from the first notes, an amazing track. Some say the song "goes nowhere," that it "stays the same from start to finish." But when you start at perfection, where is there to go? I love the beat and the bassline of this song. And when the strings come in … euphoric, and Jessie’s voice (I’m allowed to call her "Jessie," we’ve gotten really close this year) is, as usual, on point. This is the song of 2020.

2. Rina Sawayama - “Comme Des Garçons (Like The Boys)”

A song about pretending to be confident all the time. “Hot like a fever, I’ll make you a believer.” Rina says that Kylie Minogue’s 2001 Fever album was a big influence for this song.

3. Roisin Murphy - "Something More" (Radio Edit)

Roisin Murphy gave us one of the best albums of 2020 when she released Roisin Machine. It's a pop/dance album filled with disco influences like she has been serving us for decades, but this one stands out over her previous releases. "Something More" is the cherry on top of a very delicious cake.

4. ZHU feat. Tinashe - "ONLY"

This is a typical ZHU song. A bit dark. Great beats, great bassline. Tinashe’s voice makes every song better (remember Britney’s "Slumber Party"?)

5. Aluna - "Envious"

Half of the duo Aluna George put out a very pleasing solo album this year, and "Envious" is the best track on that album.

6. SG Lewis - "Impact" (feat. Robyn & Channel Tres)

Samuel George Lewis has released some amazing tracks over the last couple of years. This collab with Robyn and Channel Tres is a match made in dance floor heaven. FYI: SG Lewis also co-wrote and co-produced Dua Lipa’s "Hallucinate."

7. Låpsey - "Womxn"

I will say it again, cause there is beauty in repetition.” This song should have been a bigger hit than it was.

8. Arizona Zervas - "Nightrider"

Better than his monster hit “Roxanne.” Normally when songs from artists like this start with that typical rapper's short "yo" I press next. But this one stuck.

9. Tensnake - "Automatic"

A cover of The Pointer Sisters "Automatic" from 1984. Tensnake is one of the best dance producers of our time. His song "Coma Cat" from 2010 is a classic!

10. Miley Cyrus - "Midnight Sky"

I always prefer Miley songs without the video, cause I think she tries way too hard to be … I don’t even know what. But this is a great song though.

11. Foxes - "Love Not Loving You"

Finally! Foxes release a great track again, six years after "Let Go For Tonight." This is a great pop song, commercial without being like any other pop song. Put your hands up for single people.

12. Jack Garrett - "Circles"

A song about the battles you can have with yourself. The lyrics are a bit depressing but the beat in the chorus is strangely euphoric.

13. Kevin Garrett - "Gone Again"

No relation to his colleague above.

The thing with Kevin Garrett is that he looks like this nerdy white guy with big glasses and then he makes these great songs with so much soul and rhythm that seem impossible for someone who looks like that. He’s a great songwriter. He even collaborated with Beyonce on her Lemonade album.

14. Jessie Ware - "The Kill"

This is the second Jessie Ware song on this list, but I could easily have included more than half of the songs from What’s Your Pleasure?. Like I said before, listen to this album. And go see her live if you ever have the chance.

15. Dua Lipa - "Hallucinate"

You can’t talk about 2020 music and not mention Dua Lipa. This was her year. She put out a great album and got nominated for six Grammys® for it. "Hallucinate" tied with "Fever" for me as my favorites from Future Nostalgia

16. Kiesza - "All Of The Feelings"

Kiesza released her second album independently this year with some delay after suffering a terrible car accident in 2017 which left her with a brain injury and loss off balance. It took her over a year to recover. But she is back! Her album Crave will lift you up with its pop songs. My favorite is "All Of The Feelings." This could have been a CRJ song, just to give you a feel for how bubbly and happy it is. (You probably know Kiesza from her massive 2014 hit "Hideaway.")

17. Kylie Minogue - "Fine Wine"

Kylie released an album again this year The long awaited DISCO, her fifteenth studio album. With this album, she set an impressive record in the UK. When it entered at #1 on the official album charts, it made Kylie the first solo artist to have a #1 album in five consecutive decades (she had #1 albums in 1988, 1989, 1992, 2001, 2010, 2018, 2019 and 2020). The album has been a huge success so far, even making it to #26 on the US Billboard 200.

DISCO is Kylie at her best. Up-tempo no nonsense pop music filled with 70's disco (surprise). This album is made for the dance floor (of a gay bar). And  you can’t go wrong with a song about wine. Beep-Beep.

18. Dadi Freyr - "Think About Things"

The Eurovision entry for Iceland this year would have been their first win in the festival. I’m sure of it. It’s a great song. Let’s see if he can write another great song for Eurovision 2021.

19. Lady Gaga - "Alice"

The best song on Chromatica. Pure Lady Gaga pop. Never stop dreaming of Wonderland.

20. The Pussycat Dolls - "React"

This is this year's "Never Really Over." Never been a big PCD fan but this “comeback” song deserved more attention (hence “comeback” in quotes). I’ve heard they shelved some other songs because this one flopped. Maybe in 2021.

21. Agnes - "Fingers Crossed"

This is pure Swedish pop. It really doesn’t get more Swedish than this. This deserved to be as big as "Release Me" was back in 2009. “My fingers crossed, your heart is a dancer. Too good to be true, can’t take my eyes off you.” This is the perfect lip-sync song for a drag queen. It's happy and gay and even has a bit of drama. Anyone?

22. Chromeo - "'Roni Got Me Stressed Out"

Chromeo made a great EP while in quarantine. Songs about the pandemic and everything that comes with that, but adding a big dose of humor. This EP will make you dance in your living room while you’re on "house arrest."  “Someone get me Dr. Fauci on the phone.”

23. Fletcher - "If I Hated You"

A great mid-tempo pop song about, well, not having a shitty relationship with your ex. (But that can make things even more complicated.)

24. Troye Sivan - "Take Yourself Home"

Troye Sivan almost never disappoints. This is also a great song about being lost. We all need some direction sometimes. I especially love the last 30 seconds when the beat kicks in.

25. Tobiahs - "Running" (feat. Iris Lune)

Another great dance song. (Starting to see a pattern here? Can you imagine how hard this year has been for me with all the bars and clubs closed? I miss dancing.) This song has some little Arabic influences and the voice of Iris Lune really lifts it to a higher level.

26. Kelly Rowland - "Crazy"

A no-nonsense pop song about being in love. Nothing more, nothing less. Of course with a dose of disco, like a lot of songs this year. Nothing wrong with that.

Music has always been an important factor in my life. As a 10 year old I would record songs from the radio on my double cassette recorder. I would go the record store before, to get the printed top 40 so I would know in which order the songs would appear on the radio. I’d make a selection of the songs I wanted to record in advance because I didn’t want to record the same songs as the week before. I still have some of the tapes in my mom’s attic.

Nowadays it’s much easier to listen to your favorite songs and to discover new music thanks to streaming services. According to Spotify, I have listened about 80,000 minutes (that’s over 1300 hours!) of music in 2019 and ‘discovered’ 464 new artists.

Here are my 19 best songs of ’19. (In alphabetical order by artist. I couldn’t possibly rank them.) Songs that made me smile and dance in my living room, my shower, and on the shop floor of the store I work at. (I could have extended this list with another 50 songs with ease btw. )

1. Cheryl – Let You

I have a weakness for Cheryl. The most beautiful but kinda tacky woman from Britain (She has a tattoo on her ass that covers her whole ass. Not very Downton Abbey-ish) But she makes perfect pop songs. Her songs always make me reenact the video in my mind with me in the lead of course. I know, very gay. But her songs always make me wanna dance. So does this song.

2. Diplo, Charli XCX and Herve Pagez – Spicy

A remake of “Wannabe” from the Spice Girls, Diplo Style. How can you not love this? I love the fact that they don’t sing the original chorus in this version, but turned it into a catchy instrumental part.

3. Dirty Vegas – Days Go By (CamelPhat Remix)

The original version of this song is from 2002. I loved it from the first notes as I do this 2019 version of CamelPhat. This is the kind of song that can get me into a trance at 3 AM in a club. No XTC needed here. Good dance music does the trick and better too.  Close your eyes and let go.

4. Everyone You Know – She Don’t Dance

Two British guys who make music that hard to put into a box. I got to know them last year with their first single “Our Generation.” Also a great song. I love the beat of this song

5. Craig David – Do You Miss Me Much

When I lived in London in 2004/05, dubstep was huge. It had been for a few years. Craig David was one the most commercial artists in the genre. I love the irregular basslines of dubstep.  This songs brings me back to the clubs of London 15 years ago.

6. Hayden James – Better Together

The last few years there have emerged a few really good producers/DJs that do it all. They write, produce and record their own vocals on the songs. Like Elderbrook, Youngr and Hayden James. The first 2 I saw live (recommended) Hayden James is still on my wishlist. I love these kind of dance songs. Positive vibes and not too aggressive.

7. Jessie Ware – Mirage (Don’t Stop)

Jessie’s voice is briljant. It doesn’t matter if she sings a tear-jerking ballad or a kick-ass dance track. This beat gives me goosebumps. Don’t stop moving together!

8. Kevin Garrett – Running From

I don’t only listen to pop and dance music (listen to my Sunday Morning Diamonds playlist on Spotify). This song of Kevin Garrett I love because of the mellow beat and the lyrics. Kevin Garrett is a brilliant singer/songwriter. He also worked on Beyonce’s Lemonade (an album that I don’t really care for, though).

9. Kleerup & Aluna George – Lover Table

I love the dark feel of Kleerup's dance songs. I got to know him when he released “With Every Heartbeat” with Robyn in 2007. He released a couple of great dances songs the last couple of years with Titiyo and Neneh Cherry. This one with Aluna George is also really nice. I really like her voice.

10. Mahmood – Bario

Mahmood participated in the Eurovision Song Contest this year, with the song “Soldi,” where he ended up second after Duncan Laurence. His next single is called “Bario.” I have no idea what the song means. The translation doesn’t make me any wiser.  I like the flamenco guitar sound mixed with the contemporary beats.

11. Naila  Support You

Naila is an Egyptian vocalist. That’s all I know. Listen to this song with your headphones on and put the bass on maximum.

12. Regard – Ride It

“Ride It” is a remake (I wouldn’t call it a cover, because it so very different than the original) from the Jay Sean song from 2007. This is the ultimate summer song. Like “Ocean Drive” from Duke Dumont was in 2015. Ride it, just lose control.

13. Roxeanne Hazes – Bonnie & Clyde

My only Dutch song in this list. I like Roxeanne’s music. “Verdovend Middel” (2017) is one of my favorite songs from the last 10 years. The beat sounds very much NOT like any other Dutch language songs. This song also has a very international feel to it. At last year’s Tropikali festival they played the song. I was the only one singing and dancing along to it. People were looking at me like I had lost it. “Do I look like I care? Cause I don’t.” ☺

14. SG Lewis with Kamille – Easy Loving You

A beautiful down tempo break-up song. This song gets me every time. And I’m not all bothered by the heavy use of the auto-tune, which I normally don’t really like.

15. Shura – Side Effects

From Shura’s album Forevher. This is definitely my favorite song. I’ve seen her live a couple of weeks ago in the Melkweg and also live it’s a beautiful song. It has that chill soulful sound.

16. SYML – Where’s My Love

Definitely the most depressing song in this list. (Don’t watch the video if you feel down already.) Hurt and pain can make beautiful songs. Death can even be a powerful inspiration like with this song.  Get your tissues ready.

17. Tom Aspaul – Traces

I LOVE TOM ASPAUL. A British singer songwriter who should have made it big a long time ago. He has a pretty high voice, has to be your thing, but his songs are fucking briljant. Listen to 2013s “Índiana.” You’ll love it.

18. Tove Lo & MC Zaac – Are U Gonna Tell Her?

My favorite song from the album Sunshine Kitty (and there is a song with Kylie Minogue on there, so that says a lot). I love the vibe of this song. The beat is briljant.

19. Will Young  Forever

Will Young released an album this year that deserves a lot more credit than it got. None of the singles even reached the top 100 in the UK. A bloody shame. “Forever” is my favorite song of the album. A depressing song lyric wise but a great beat. Again a song that can get me into ecstasy without XTC.

Bonus Track!

20. Tove Lo & Kylie Minogue – Really Don’t Like You

I really don’t understand why this song didn’t even became a mild hit. It is fucking pop perfection of the two pop princesses. (But maybe I’m biased. Kylie was my artist of the decade on Spotify) This song deserved to be a freaking top 10 hit. But that’s just my humble opinion.

So there you go. My 19 (+1) of 2019. I hope you heard something you liked.
