As you all know, my lists are based on albums, not songs.

I got 32 albums this year. That's almost three a month! And I'm trying something new this year. It's levels, album levels!

Just hear me out. It's a good idea! There are three basic levels, gold, silver, and bronze. But there's also platinum! Obviously gold means it's a great album, silver is really good and bronze is just good. Platinum means they knocked it out of the park. So, without any more ado...

💎Platinum 💎

Suede - Autofiction

Things that did not change in 2023: Suede is still the best band on the planet.

Things that did change in 2023: Critics noticed.

Suede makes another classic album. Wow. Shocker, right?

So, great as usual, they incorporated a little bit of a post-punk sound in some tracks. It's got the riffs, it's got the best voice on the planet, it's got the weird lyrics and it's got the melodies. Aw, man, the melodies!

Ryan Adams - Romeo & Juliet

[Editor's Note (2/2): Hoo boy. Buddy, you are on your own here. Still, it's your list ...]

So, apparently people got over the fact that some musicians are not the best boyfriend material and that, lo and behold, they can also be bad husbands. Weird! I thought every musician was a great person that never did anything illegal or beat any women like Bowie, Lennon, Jimmy Page, and other exemplary citizens. No, seriously, looks like the silly "cancellation" of Ryan because of a slightly partial NYT article (LOL) that was based on the word of a bunch of innocent ladies he dragged out of a church and who are not at all gold diggers or absolute careerists has started to fade. The FBI cleared him and all. He released five (!!!!!!!) albums in 2022. Romeo and Juliet is the best one. "Rollercoaster" and "Doylestown Girl" are worth the price of admission alone.

Ryan Adams - Chris

A double album because why not. Absolute gold (I mean, platinum) most of it.

🥇Gold🥇

Fred Again.. - Actual Life (2022)

This makes my heart dance.

Beach House - Once Twice Melody

This makes my heart explode.

Alvvays - Blue Rev

Shorter songs, not as good as the first two but still pretty solid.

Arctic Monkeys - The Car

Not quite Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino, but almost there.

Band of Horses - Things Are Great

The "things" referenced in the title are the songs on the album.

Editors - EBM

Taking the electric sound a little too far, but still awesome. I mean, it's Editors.

Interpol - The Other Side of Make Believe

Still going strong.

Ryan Adams - Devolver

Third best album he put out this year.

Ryan Adams - FM

Fourth best album he put out this year.

🥈Silver🥈

The 1975 - Being Funny In A Foreign Language

Arcade Fire - WE

Bloc Party - Alpha Games

British Sea Power - Everything Was Forever

Fontaines D.C. - Skinty Fia

Nilufer Yanya - Painless

Phoenix - Alpha Zulu

Good Looks - Bummer Year

Spoon - Lucifer on the Sofa

🥉Bronze (Seriously, Guys, Try Harder)🥉

Won't even list the name of the album, they really need to make a bigger effort.

Belle & Sebastian

Bush

Junior Boys

Kasabian

Liam Gallagher

Mitski

Spiritualized

Weezer

Wilco

Thank you very much for reading!

GLW 005: Dionicio Solano

GUEST LIST WEEK

GLW 005: DIONICIO SOLANO
GLW 006: Erik Kristjanson (coming Monday)
GLW 007: Gina Uriarte (coming Tuesday)
GLW 008: Jamie Pfeifer (coming Wednesday)

I don't always do best songs of the year lists, but when I do, it's best albums of the year lists.

(10) Twin Shadow - "Saturdays" (from Caer)

I hate to be cliché but Twin Shadow definitely started at the top and has been slightly falling from there over the course of his 4 albums. He's still better at 80's nostalgia than most of the more popular 80's nostalgia artists out there though. And then this song, featuring Haim, totally rad 80's vibes!

(9) Spiritualized - "Here It Comes (The Road) Let's Go" (from And Nothing Hurt)

Yeah, Spiritualized.

I know, right?

(8) Wild Nothing - "Letting Go" (from Indigo)

Lyrics excerpt:

Letting go
I wanna be happier now
I wanna be more than closed
Surreal, the way you make me out
The way you crash me down

If Diiv is Oasis then Wild Nothing is Blur. Mmmh, that sounded better in my head. Anyway, more of the same from WN, in a good way.

(7) Richard Ashcroft - "Streets of Amsterdam" (from Natural Rebel)

NME gave this album a poor review, Richard burned an NME magazine on his Instagram account. I am Richard and NME is the music world.

Yeah, that one sounded better in my head too...

(6) Mitski - "Two Slow Dancers" (from Be The Cowboy)

This song made me cry. I cry once every 2 years or so. Rest of the album is pretty good too (album of the year for Pitchfork).

(5) Blood Orange - "Saint" (from Negro Swan)

LOVE the music, could definitely do without all the spoken word and politic stuff.

(4) Beach House - "Woo" (from 7)

These guys keep getting better and better (I'm looking at you, Twin Shadow). No need to skip a song on this album (a rare feat in this day and age).

(3) Editors - "Magazine" (from Violence)

We in the podium now, baby. Bronze goes to Editors who are yet to let me down with an album. Tom and the boys know what they're doing as always.

(2) Arctic Monkeys - "Four Out Of Five" (from Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino)

AM over Editors? Well, this might be my favorite AM album so I guess all is good.

(1) Suede - "Flytipping" (from The Blue Hour)

Best band ever.

Guest List Week: Dionicio's Best of 2017

GUEST LIST WEEK
#3: Dionicio Solano
#4: Jamie Pfeifer (Coming Thursday)
#5: Megan Swidler (Coming Friday)
#6: Erik Kristjanson (Coming 12/25)
#7: Curt Trnka (Coming 12/26)
#8: Gina Uriarte (Coming 12/27)
#9: Marisa Plaice (Coming 12/28)

Here’s what I think were the best albums of 2017.

I know, I know! The list is supposed to be about the best songs but I’m old and old fashioned and I think of music in terms of albums, not songs.

Still, I’ll name a song from each album in order to create an awesome playlist that I’ll be able to listen to now that Aaron is making the lists on Youtube and not Spotify which I don’t have (I told you I’m old fashioned).

Declan McKenna - "Humongous"

Dude’s super young and super talented! That is what you get if you Google him. Besides that, let’s not kid ourselves, we know that the best music comes from the UK and this year is no different from the past sixty, seventy or however many years people have been recording LPs. This is the best 2017 had to offer, it’s official! Believe me, I am in charge of deciding this things.

Other Essential Tracks: "Brazil," "Listen To Your Friends," "Why Do You Feel So Down," "Paracetamol."

Alvvays - "Dreams Tonite"

Aaron says people don’t know how to write about Alvvays (pronounced “Always”, you’re welcome) and he might have a point. I guess I would say this is the musical equivalent of going back in time to your first kiss (or the first kiss that you enjoyed), of having one of those long, long talks with your high school best friend while listening to music in his or your car, the sound equivalent of ... home. This is a warm blanket of sound to get under (headphones) after a long cold day.

Other Standouts: "In Undertow," "Not My Baby," "Forget About Life."

Miguel - "City of Angels"

Fourth amazing album in a row.  Prince for millennials? I dunno but Miguel is yet to drop the ball and give us a bad album. Anyway, we get the usual cringe worthy lyrics he delivers every now and then but by now I’d probably miss if they weren’t on his next album. Or not.

Other Favs: "Pineapple Skies," "Banana Clip," "Now."

HURTS - "Magnificent"

HURTS made another one of those “this could be another band’s greatest hits” album. Just … wow. "Beautiful Ones," "Ready To Go," "Thinking Of You," "Wherever You Go," "Walk Away," "Spotlights," "Hold On Me."  All of those songs could and should be successful singles but, you know, most people would rather have a Bud Light instead of a cup of good red wine.

Cold War Kids - "Part of the Night"

What is wrong with the world? Why aren’t these guys super popular? They’re even from California! Great album after great album, criminally underrated. Kids these days…

Best Tracks: "Love Is Mystical," "So Tied Up," "Free To Breathe."

Ryan Adams - "Doomsday"

Just listen to it. That harmonica, that slide guitar, Ryan’s timeless voice, the melancholic and slightly generic lyrics that anyone can relate to. That, kids, is the sound of perfection. That is the sound of a Ryan Adams timeless song. He still comes up with one or two of those on every album and you should be on the lookout for them, always.

Best Of The Rest: "Do You Still Love Me," "Prisoner," "Anything I Say To You Now," "We Disappear."

The National - "Day I Die"

Turns out they’re human after all. I mean these guys were on a roll since 2005! Alligator, Boxer, High Violet (!) and Trouble Will Find Me are all faultless. It was about time they delivered an album that was not perfect, just better than 90% of the rest out there.

Other Standout Tracks: "Nobody Else Will Be There," "The System Only Dreams In Total Darkness," "Empire Line," "Guilty Party."

Slowdive - "Sugar For The Pill"

Oh, Slowdive … how I love your sweet, sweet sounds. "Sugar For The Pill" is up there with their best stuff form the 90’s and there are other very good tracks like "Star Roving" or "Slomo" that can make you nostalgic for the 90’s. Sweet, sweet Slowdive.

Land of Talk - "World Made"

I didn’t know this band existed before this 2017. There’s a lot of music out there that sounds like this, but not every album out there is packed with solid stuff like "Yes You Were," "This Time," "Loving," "Heartcore," "Macabre."

Blood Sound - "Decade of Nothing"

I keep trying to get my friends to love this band as much as I do but nobody seems to find them more than enjoyable. I seriously don’t know why they don’t lose their minds over the sound of nostalgia like I do. I mean, listen to the riffs! Did I mention the warm blanket of sound already?

Favorite Tracks: "Everything Is Always In The Past," "Rose Colored Cross," "Chloe’s Balcony," "Kyoto Suicide Club."

British Sea Power - "Bad Bohemian"

Can’t go wrong with BSP. Seriously, you can’t. They get increasingly weird album after album but they’ve still got it. Listen to "International Space Station" and "Don’t Let The Sun Get In The Way."

Ten Fe - "Don’t Forget"

Man, this song! This checks all the Indie Rock boxes in a good way. Heard this before? Yes. Bringing nothing new to the table? Yes. Still awesome? Yes.

Other Favorites: "Turn," "Elodie," "Follow."

Cut Copy - "No Fixed Destination"

These guys are still around! If you (like me) are one of the 20 people that care then you’re enjoying this album as much as me. Gotta love "Black Rainbows" and "Tied To The Weather."

Horrors - "Something to Remember Me By"

If you can get past the Grimes-like art with asian characters on it and a weird picture you’re in for the usual Horrors awesomeness. Also, I love it when bands close albums with the best track, regardless of it being up tempo instead of the usual slow, way too long ballad. I also highly enjoyed "Point Of No Reply" and "It’s A Good Life."

The XX - "On Hold"

Who would’ve thought the XX + Samples would work? Not as great as their 2 previous albums but it’s still them. I also enjoyed "Dangerous," "Replica" and "I Dare You."

Jessie Ware - "Hearts"

I never said I hated pop. I just hate pop that sucks (90% of it). Jessie my girl is with the other 10%. "Finish What We Started" and "Love To Love" would also sound very nice in the radio (not that I ever listen to it but I’m pretty sure no station plays them).

Sheer Mag - "Pure Desire"

All about the riffs. Well, the riffs, the raspy voice and the super catchy melodies. Oh, and the nice rhythm section. Listen to "Need To Feel Your Love," "Suffer Me" and "’Til You Find The One" if you like what you hear.

Liam Gallagher - "For What It’s Worth"

He’s sorry, Noel! Listen to the song, reform the band and come play in Monterrey Mexico! Preferably on a Saturday so my kids don’t lose a school day over the trip. I also liked "Chinatown" and "Wall of Glass."

Noel Gallagher - "Dead In The Water"

As good as "Talk Tonight." No. Really. The rest of the album is alright. Gotta love "The Man Who Built The Moon" and "God Help Us All."

Albums That Disappointed: Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, Elbow, Flaming Lips, Fleet Foxes, Hair, Kasabian, The Killers, LCD Soundsystem, Morrissey (hey, I still have hope), Passion Pit, Phoenix, The Shins, The Sound of Arrows, Spoon (why you, Spoon, why you?), Starsailor, War on Drugs, Weezer, Wolf Parade.

Guest List Week: Dionicio's Best of 2016

[It's Guest List Week! The best week! You've heard my thoughts on the year in music, now let's hear from some other people who have equally great taste in music (but somehow have the ability to express their opinions in under 10,000 words)! Guest List Week continues with Dionicio, our Britpop correspondent in Mexico.]

***

***

This is best albums of 2016 list, but I have chosen a song to represent each album because it's my list.

1. Suede - "Outsiders" (from Night Thoughts)

Suede, the connoisseur's rock band. The Bowie on steroids, urban poetic, melodies to die for, voice that will never be matched, riffs that will burn in your brain band made another album. If you know them, this album is what would happen if Dog Man Star and Coming Up had a baby. If you don't this is the best album of 2016. Give it 3 listens and you'll see.

2.  Diiv - "Loose Ends" (from Is The Is Are)

Can you hear it? The sound of awesome caressing your ears? The shoegazer band with the hyperactive rhythm section? A lot of people didn't listen. Like Moz said "The world won't listen". An album that had at least 3 versions of the Cure's "Just Like Heaven" with whispered vocals. Need I say more? Well if I do, "Take Your Time" was probably the melancholic track of the year.

3. David Bowie - "Blackstar" (from Blackstar)

D A V I D     B O W I E.

There are artists as good as Bowie, but there are no "better than Bowie" artists. This was this legend's last album. It feels weird to say it, "Bowie's last album".

4. Ladyhawke - "Money To Burn" (from Wild Things)

Oh the tunes, the tunes this album has. Sweet sugary pop perfection. Euro style. The title track, "Sweet Fascination", "Dangerous". All superb stuff that wouldn't be out of place on her absolutely perfect debut album from years ago. It does have a terrible track: "Golden Girl". But the good out-weights the bad.

5. Love Of Lesbian - "Contraespionaje" (from El Poeta Halley)

El mejor disco en español del año, por el mejor grupo en español en este momento. Nada de lo actual se les acerca ni un poco.

6. Hockey Dad - "Dylan's Place" (from Boronia)

If I were a surfer I would've played this album a million times this year. But I'm not a surfer, so I guess I only played it hundreds of times?

7. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - "Skeleton Tree" (from Skeleton Tree)

From Wikipedia:
"During the sessions Cave's 15-year-old son Arthur died from an accidental cliff fall. Most of the album had been written at the time of Cave's son's death, but several lyrics were amended by Cave during subsequent recording sessions and feature themes of death, loss and personal grief."
You're in one of 2 groups, those who can relate and those who can't. If you're in the first group this album is for you.

8. Blood Orange - "Hands Up" (from Freetown Sound)

There's no "You're Not Good Enough" in this year's Blood Orange album. But that doesn't mean it's a bad album, still pretty good. Eighth best album of the year good. On the other hand, cover art is consistently terrible, he doesn't lower his standards in this area.

9. Springtime Carnivore - "Double Infinity" (from Midnight Room)

That voice.

This album should probably be higher on this list, but I've just recently discovered it. Maybe it should be 2 or 3 places higher. Oh well. Did I mention I love her voice?

10. Richard Ashcroft - "This Is How It Feels" (from These People)

Mad Richard is still creating beautiful songs, much, much better than "Bittersweet Symphony". I don't think he's still waling around and not letting people get in his way, he sounds wiser, but who knows.

The "made some great music, but this year's album is just not that great" list:

Band of Horses
Bloc Party
Bon Iver
Classixx
Crystal Castles
Disclosure
Empire of the Sun
How to Dress Well
James Blake
Junior Boys
Kings of Leon
Last Shadow Puppets
M83
Radio Dept.
Travis
Two Door Cinema Club
Wild Nothing

The "should just retire and stop dragging their name in the mud" list:

Radiohead
Pixies
Strokes
Weezer
Wilco
Radiohead (they should retire twice)

Guest List Week: Dionicio's Best of 2015

[Guest List Week goes briefly international, with Dionicio Solano checking in from Saltillo, Mexico! It looks like Dio shares my disappointment in this years' long-awaited Libertines and Blur albums, but today we're focusing on the positive. I love the fact that everyone has a different favorite Grimes song this year. Art Angels is a fascinating record.]

First of all, I'm not really a song type of person, I'm more of an album guy. So, here's my top 10 albums of 2015 (one song from each album in case this will turn into a playlist):

(1) Ryan Adams - 1989 ("Style")

A track by track cover album the best of 2015? Indeed. I've always seen Adams as a massively underrated genius songwriter, but this record made me appreciate him more as a singer, musician and arranger. Ryan could take Magic!'s "Rude" and make it sound good. Ok, maybe not good, but decent at least. I really wanted to hate this record just because it exists, in a Pitchfork kinda way, but I just can't. Long live Ryan Adams and whatever he releases.

(2) HURTS - Surrender ("Lights")

I know, I hate the capital letters too. Such arrogance. Anyway, I didn't expect this record to be so good. It definitely raises the bar from their previous 2. Sticky chorus galore. And although there is no "Wonderful Life" here, each and every track is very strong, some excellent. This could really be some other band's Greatest Hits album. It's that good.

(3) Grimes - Art Angels ("Butterfly")

Wow. Just wow. Mind = blown.

(4) Twin Shadow - Eclipse ("To the Top")

This could also be a singles collection from some other band, although a much nostalgic one. This baby is filled with delicious 80'sness, bombastic choruses and power ballads that should have been in 80's movies about karate or some other martial art. Did I mention the nostalgia?

(5) Editors - In Dream ("Life is a Fear")

Gone are the days when Editors would ooze perfection and create masterpieces like their first 2 albums. Still, this is a pretty good album in general, just not a great Editors album. I really, really can't believe they ruined a collaboration with Rachel Goswell by using the weakest song on the album to feature her. Anyway, this is still a better album than most of what came out this year. It's Editors.

(6) Phantom Posse - Home ("The Road is My Home")

Cloudy/rainy day music that you can sit down and relax to. The best tracks are the Makonnen (as in every PP album), it has a song dedicated to his father about being stranded in an airport. Good luck getting it out of your head if you listen to it.

(7) Miguel - Wildheart ("Hollywood Dreams")

If you get past the tacky cover you find a great record. It does have a couple of (again) tacky songs, but it also has "Hollywood Dreams," "Coffee," "Simple Things" and other absolute winners. It also has a Lenny Kravitz collaboration that you thankfully never notice he features on. He could do with a little more classy lyrics, but the tunes and arrangements are top notch.

(8) Dornik - Dornik ("Stand In Your Line")

Polished production + Michael Jackson-like voice + good tunes + no cursing every 5 seconds = Dornik.

(9) Disclosure - Caracal ("Omen")

Everyone needs some good pop music, specially if it comes from a duo that takes their craft so seriously. They could release each and every one of these songs as singles, that should say something.

(10) Brandon Flowers - The Desired Effect ("Can't Deny My Love")

It's not a Killers album but it'll do in the meantime.
