Halfway Point 2010: 1-5

Well, we made it. See you all in six months.

1. Broken Social Scene – “World Sick”

I know this will sound pretentious, but, to me, these five songs really do capture the sound of what it feels like to be alive in the first half of 2010, this one especially. I get world sick, you know? Sometimes we all do.

2. Yeasayer – “O.N.E.”

If Ilana made a Top 100 list, this song would be #1. It would also be #2, all of the top ten, and probably about 35 of the top 50. If she had to choose between this song and all the other songs released in 2010, combined, I think she would choose this one. (And, to be honest, it's probably the favorite for year-end #1).

3. Hold Steady – “Weekenders”

Previously discussed here.

4. Arcade Fire – “We Used to Wait”

Lyrically, there is a LOT going on with this new Arcade Fire record, and this song seems like a perfect juxtaposition of progress and nostalgia. The line "we used to wait" could almost be followed by "seriously, like it would take days ... can you guys believe that?" The song veers from an incredulous "How did we ever live like that?" to a conflicted "Now that we don't, did we lose anything?" We used to wait. Now we don't have to. So what does that say about us?

5. New Pornographers – “Crash Years”

Previously discussed here.

  1. Great stuff. I'm on board with all five. A rarity, I know. My nitpick would be that World Sick is too long to be #1.

Really enjoyed the 5 a day angle. Hopefully it was fun to put together. I look forward to days off where I'm not sick and I can devote serious time to rambling on and on.
