After considering it for many years, this is my first guest list! I went into 2025 with the intention of writing one at the end of the year, and I was very happy it drove me to listen to a lot more new music. So, thank you, Aaron and the rest of the guest list writers for the peer pressure.
Without further ado, not in much particular order:
(1) Tei Shi - “Drop Dead”
The top song reserved for my top artist of 2025. Tei Shi falls into the category of “I can’t believe she plays venues this small … why doesn’t everyone in the world love her as much as me?” Saw her at Sleeping Village with 60 other people and it was amazing.
(2) King Princess - “RIP KP”
Loved this album from top to bottom and loved them live. Tough to pick a best song, but here’s my nominee.
(3) Olivia Dean - “Man I Need”
(4) Anna of the North - “Waiting For Love"
This tour came through Chicago while I was out of town and I was v sad to miss my favorite Norwegian siren.
(5) MØ - “Who Said”
If you’re noticing a dance pop theme with only female vocalists, well, buckle up there’s 20 more.
(6) Vendredi sur Mer - “Malabar Princess”
This song is fancy, because it’s in French.
(7) Miley Cyrus - “Something Beautiful”
This is the same artist as Hannah Montana! The range is incredible. There’s an argument that Miley is the most talented artist of the last 20 years, and that argument would be made by me.
(8) AMANZI - “Go Where You're Wanted”
Just a feel-good track with great vocals and a great message.
(9) Lahra - “Leave Me When I Need You”
A less feel-good track but still great nonetheless.
(10) MØ - “Wake Me Up”
A remake of a 12 year old Avicii (r.i.p.) track but make it dancier? Say less, I’m here for it.
(11) Haute & Freddy - “Shy Girl”
This song is dedicated to my 4 year old niece who doesn’t have to say hi to you if she doesn’t want to.
(12) Lola Young - “One Thing”
Very upsetting that she cancelled her tour. I hope you’re OK, girl.
(13) FKA twigs, North West - “Childlike Things”
This was one of the weirdest shows I’ve been to, and that’s a high bar. Also, I listened to this for weeks before I realized it was that North West.
(14) Fia James - “Knock the Wind Out of Me”
Technically from late 2024, but just too good not to include. It’s a slow build to 2:20 but god dammit it’s worth it.
(15) BANKS - “Off With Her Head”
“Beggin for Thread” was on my top-played list for years so I was pumped for a new BANKS album. A little short of expectations for me, but still in heavy rotation. This is my favorite track from it.
(16) Rose Gray - “Everything Changes (But I Won't)”
Loved this album, so it got two tracks. And listened to it enough that Spotify recommended me a playlist named “hot girl agenda”. I loved that too.
(17) Passion Pit, Sofi Tukker - “Sleepyhead 2025”
A little throwback dance remix for the elder millennial crew.
(18) Disco Lines, Tinashe - “No Broke Boys”
This song is objectively bad and including it is an attack on the integrity of this whole blog. BUT IT’S SO FUN. In a list full of #sadgals, this is an anthem of self-confidence … “No broke boys, no new friends. I'm that pressure, give me my 10s.”
(19) Carly Rae Jepsen - “More”
A quick 2025 reminder of why we love CRJ. I got so excited when this dropped, I thought we were getting a full new album. Not the case, and we want MORE. ***yikes, cringey joke***
(20) Rose Gray - “April”
Put me in a warehouse at 4am with this on repeat until I die.
(21) Låpsley - “SOUND OF SILENCE”
OK, calm it back down for a minute. I love Låpsley and this was a departure from her typical stuff, but very cool.
(22) Goldie Boutilier - “Favorite Fear”
I can’t wait for this show. She’s new to me but absolutely rocks.
(23) Empress Of - “Blasting Through the Speakers”
Are we going to get a new Empress Of album?? And tour?? Please?
(24) Daya - “Drift Away”
I’m running out of writing, but I liked this song!
(25) Night Tapes - “pacifico”
Some low-key vibes to almost wrap it up here.
And now, a couple departures from the general theme of this list, but these were definitely in the rotation.
(26) Cousin Fik, E-40, Too $hort – “Thangin”
For those in college for the “Ghost Ride the Whip” E-40 era, there’s real nostalgia here. Also, there’s maybe never been a bigger gap between the quality of the beat and the lyrics. Lyrics by ChatGPT on this one, but the song BANGS.
(27) Fred again.., Skepta, PlaqueBoyMax - “Victory Lap”
And the finale for a significant departure. In the words of my EDM-loving 24 year old trainer, “This song FUCKS”. I completely agree.
