Many moons ago, someone who I can’t even recall anymore, tipped me off about a particular SoundCloud account with some very groovy, deep-ish, haus-ish mixes on it. Then, as now, I felt far too uncool for whatever was happening on SoundCloud. But fortunately I dipped my toes anyway and discovered something totally worth my while. And so to this day, I still go to the Laut & Luise account multiple times a month to check on the latest “Montagssorbet” (or, “Monday Sorbet”). To be clear: I am not clued into the German electronic music scene, so I don’t know any of the DJs who are part of this collective I’ve been listening to for years now – but that simply does not matter. The mixes serve as melodic sorbet (i.e., something easy and delicious) designed to transition listener’s into the week’s start. I have reached for it many times throughout this year in particular as an antidote to the Monday blues. And, more saliently, as a companion to those 3am wake sessions on Tuesday mornings when my chronotype or youngest roommate is getting the best of me.

The following are the top 5 Montagssorbet of 2023 in my view. It’s difficult to write about them individually because each is a smorgasbord of sounds and vibes that I’m not fully equipped to remark on.
