There is still beauty to be found in this world! In the cracks of light between the algorithms. There is still art bursting through the droning hum that desensitizes. In the crevices between our burnt out brains, something exciting still resonates. There are still hips to be swayed and shoulders to shimmy! In the refreshes between our doom scrolls, there are moments of creativity and awe. Someone reaches a height at the very moment we doubted they would climb again. In between the valleys, there is a new peak! And a silence, not unnerving but full. There is a whole rest, not a down beat. And then a modulation that lifts us. In the broken pieces there is a moment of understanding and forgiveness. Of moving on. In the moments of self awareness of the person in the mirror, there is the release of letting go to the performer. There are primal moments. Self-judgement left abandoned at an altar to music. It’s not a cry for help but a declaration of hope. Create! Absorb! Languish! Heal! Be inspired! There is still beauty to be found in this world!
Below are 30 tracks that showed me those glimpses - started with the most powerful moments of awe. “Reliquia” hit me like a beam of light as Roaslia lamented the broken pieces of herself around the globe. Gaga showed that she could still make an all-time dance-pop anthem with “Abracadabra.” Oliva Dean breathed a fresh and timeless breath into the airwaves with “Man I Need.” Twigs took us to the ball with “Sushi.” Tate assumed a pop sex-pot mantle in a way we’ve only seen from Britney. There were new names to me in the form of Eli, Amaarae, Rochelle Jordan, Audrey Hobert. And returns from some of my all-time faves, including The Clipse, Taylor (finally, a song you can throw ass to), Robyn, Kehlani and more … Not bad, 2025!
